Dancing, Singing and Smiles: Dance Hastings Brings Joy to Seaview

News | June 25, 2025

At Cardinal Healthcare, we believe that life in care should be vibrant, meaningful, and full of moments to cherish. Our ethos is rooted in compassion, dignity, and the belief that every resident—regardless of age or diagnosis—deserves opportunities to express themselves, connect with others, and experience joy. That’s why we were absolutely delighted to welcome Dance Hastings, a local charity organisation, to Seaview Nursing Home for a day of music, movement, and laughter.

A Day of Celebration

From the moment the Dance Hastings team arrived, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air. Residents gathered in the lounge, some with curious smiles, others already tapping their feet in anticipation. The team brought with them a wonderful array of colourful scarves, jangling bells, and even paper plates—simple props that would soon become the tools for creativity and connection.

The session began with gentle introductions and warm-up stretches, set to familiar tunes that had everyone humming along. The Dance Hastings facilitators were full of energy and encouragement, ensuring that each resident felt comfortable and included, regardless of mobility or confidence. Their approach was wonderfully person-centred, echoing the values we hold dear at Cardinal Healthcare.

Music as a Bridge

Music has a unique power to transcend barriers, evoke memories, and bring people together. As the first song began, the room was transformed. Residents waved scarves in time with the melody, their faces lighting up as the colours danced through the air. For many, these simple movements unlocked memories of childhood games, family celebrations, and dances from years gone by.

The facilitators encouraged everyone to join in, adapting the activities so that all could participate—whether standing, seated, or simply tapping a hand or foot. For those living with dementia, the familiar rhythms and melodies provided a sense of comfort and recognition, sparking smiles and even a few tears of happy nostalgia.

Bells, Scarves, and Paper Plates: Creative Expression for All

One of the highlights of the session was the use of bells and paper plates as musical instruments. Residents jingled bells to the beat, creating a joyful soundscape that filled the lounge with energy. The paper plates, decorated in advance by some of our more artistic residents, became makeshift tambourines and drums, adding a playful element to the music-making.

The facilitators from Dance Hastings were quick to celebrate every effort, no matter how small. “There’s no right or wrong here,” one of them said with a smile. “It’s all about having fun and expressing yourself.” This inclusive approach resonated deeply with our residents, many of whom found themselves laughing, singing, and moving in ways they hadn’t for some time.

The Power of Movement

Dance is about more than just steps and routines—it’s about freedom, self-expression, and connection. For our residents, especially those living with dementia, movement can be a powerful way to communicate and engage when words are difficult to find.

Throughout the session, the Dance Hastings team led the group in simple, accessible dance moves, encouraging everyone to join in at their own pace. Some residents swayed gently in their chairs, others clapped along, and a few even stood to take a turn on the “dance floor.” The room was alive with laughter, music, and the unmistakable sense of community.

Meaningful Engagement and Lasting Impact

At Cardinal Healthcare, we know that meaningful activities are essential for wellbeing. They stimulate the mind, keep the body active, and provide opportunities for social connection. The visit from Dance Hastings was a perfect example of this philosophy in action.

For residents who may sometimes feel isolated or withdrawn, the session was a chance to reconnect—with themselves, with each other, and with cherished memories. Staff noticed increased smiles, brighter moods, and a sense of accomplishment among those who took part. One resident, Margaret, summed it up perfectly: “I haven’t danced like that in years. It made me feel young again!”

Supporting Individuality and Embracing the Moment

Our approach at Cardinal Healthcare is always to see the person, not just the diagnosis. We take time to learn about each resident’s life history, preferences, and passions, so we can tailor activities that truly resonate. Events like the Dance Hastings visit are carefully chosen to reflect the interests and abilities of our community, ensuring everyone can take part and feel valued.

The use of props such as scarves, bells, and paper plates was particularly effective in making the session accessible and engaging for all. These simple items sparked creativity, encouraged participation, and added a sense of fun and novelty to the day.

A Team Effort

The success of the day was made possible not only by the wonderful Dance Hastings facilitators but also by our dedicated staff, who supported residents to join in, offered encouragement, and celebrated every moment of joy. Their commitment to compassionate, person-centred care is at the heart of what makes Seaview Nursing Home a true home for life.

Looking Forward: More Moments Like This

The positive impact of the Dance Hastings visit has inspired us to explore even more creative, inclusive activities for our residents. We are already planning future sessions, including music therapy, art workshops, and intergenerational events with local schools. Our aim is always to provide a rich and varied programme that supports the physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of everyone in our care.

Gratitude and Reflection

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dance Hastings for bringing such energy, creativity, and warmth to Seaview Nursing Home. Their visit was a beautiful reminder of the power of music, movement, and community to uplift and inspire.

As always, we are grateful to our residents and their families for their openness, enthusiasm, and trust. It is a privilege to be part of their lives and to create moments of joy, connection, and celebration together.

At Cardinal Healthcare, we are committed to providing homes where every person is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to live life to the fullest. The Dance Hastings visit was a shining example of this ethos in action—and we look forward to many more days filled with music, movement, and smiles.
