At Cardinal Healthcare, we believe that a care home should be more than just a place to live – it should be a community, a family, and above all, a space where joyful memories are created every day.
And what better way to celebrate this spirit than with a sunshine-filled, 70s-themed BBQ party at our much-loved Birdscroft Nursing Home in Surrey?
With the summer in full swing and the garden in bloom, our team at Birdscroft pulled out all the stops to create a truly spectacular afternoon of music, dancing, laughter, and delicious food. The event was open to residents, staff, family and friends, and what a party it turned out to be!
As guests arrived, they were greeted by colourful bunting, flower-power decorations, and staff members dressed in their finest flares, headbands, and retro prints. The atmosphere was electric from the very start – the 1970s came back to life in full colour!
Our residents couldn’t help but smile as they recognised their favourite styles and songs from a decade filled with unforgettable memories. It wasn’t just a party – it was a heart-warming walk down memory lane, complete with live entertainment and the joyful hum of conversation across generations.
A highlight of the day was our fabulous live pianist, who delighted the crowd with renditions of classic 70s hits. From Elton John to ABBA, Queen to Carpenters, there wasn’t a quiet toe in the garden. Familiar tunes brought back stories, emotions, and plenty of spontaneous dancing.
It was particularly moving to see our residents join in – some clapping along, others dancing with carers and family members, and many simply soaking in the moment with happy tears and wide smiles. Music has a beautiful way of unlocking memories, and it was truly on show that afternoon.
No garden party would be complete without a brilliant BBQ – and our kitchen team didn’t disappoint! The menu catered for everyone, with a range of vegetarian, vegan, and traditional BBQ favourites on offer.
Guests tucked into:
Juicy beef and veggie burgers
Classic hotdogs (meat and plant-based)
Fresh, crisp salads
An array of condiments and homemade slaws
Cold beers, prosecco, and refreshing soft drinks
There was something for everyone, and the delicious aromas wafting from the grill kept spirits high. The dining area – set up in the garden under shady parasols – buzzed with conversation and laughter. Compliments to the chef were flowing all afternoon!
As the party rolled into the late afternoon, it was time for a surprise that had everyone talking: a dance performance by our wonderful Birdscroft staff, who had secretly been rehearsing for weeks.
Dressed in full disco gear, the team hit the stage (well, the patio!) with a high-energy routine to the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive”. The audience erupted with cheers, claps, and laughter. It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable day – not just entertaining, but also a true demonstration of the care, creativity, and joy that our staff bring to every event.
One resident summed it up perfectly:
“They really do go the extra mile here – I haven’t laughed this much in years!”
Events like this are more than just fun – they are an important part of life in a residential care home. They foster a sense of community, boost mental wellbeing, and bring people of all ages together.
Seeing families, residents, staff, and local friends share stories, dance, and eat together reminded us all of the magic that can happen when people connect. We had family members saying how grateful they were to be part of their loved ones’ lives in such meaningful ways. It was a celebration of life, and a showcase of what person-centred, compassionate care truly looks like.
Located in the peaceful countryside of Surrey, Birdscroft Nursing Home is one of four homes operated by Cardinal Healthcare, and is known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and excellent 24-hour nursing care.
Our care is rooted in compassion, and we understand the importance of creating a homely environment where each resident is treated with dignity and respect. From freshly prepared meals to engaging daily activities, every detail is designed to support wellbeing – physically, emotionally, and socially.
The 70s BBQ party is just one of the many events our homes host throughout the year. Whether it’s art workshops, musical afternoons, or themed garden parties, we love creating opportunities for our residents to enjoy life to the fullest.
The joy of the day was made even more special by the kind words we received from guests. One message in particular, from Jackie, the niece of our lovely resident Rose, truly touched our hearts:
“Thanks again for sending me the lovely photograph of Francis and Rose, Trushna, and thank you for a lovely afternoon – it was a great party. Your team is so lovely.”
— Jackie, Rose’s niece xx
It means the world to our team to know that the care, effort and love they put into these events are felt and appreciated by both residents and their families. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do, and the difference it makes.
We would like to extend our deepest thanks to the team at Birdscroft for making this event such a success. From decorations to dancing, food to music, every detail was filled with thought and love. Our dedicated staff are truly the heartbeat of our home – always going above and beyond to bring happiness to others.
To the families and friends who joined us – thank you for your ongoing support and for helping to make the day even more special. And of course, to our residents, whose joy, warmth, and stories light up every room, thank you for reminding us every day why we do what we do.
As the sun set over Birdscroft’s garden and the last notes of disco faded into the evening, one thing was certain: this was a day we’ll be talking about for a long time. A day filled with laughter, connection, and pure joy.
Because at Cardinal Healthcare, it’s not just about care – it’s about living life with meaning and celebration.
Stay tuned for more heart-warming stories from across our care homes. And until the next dance party, we’ll keep the spirit of the 70s alive – one smile at a time.
