A Double Celebration: Special Birthdays at The Willows

News | June 13, 2025

At The Willows Nursing Home, we believe in marking life’s special moments with warmth, joy, and a strong sense of community. Recently, we had the pleasure of celebrating not just one, but two cherished residents’ birthdays — Mr Masood Zia, who turned 75, and Mr Michael Creaton, who celebrated his 76th year. It was a day filled with laughter, reflection, and heartfelt celebration as we came together to honour two individuals who have become much-loved members of our Willows family.

A Day to Remember

The weather was kind, casting a cheerful glow over the home and setting the perfect tone for the day’s festivities. Our team, with the help of residents and families, had been busy preparing for the event — decorating the lounge with balloons, bunting, and personalised birthday banners that made the space feel festive and welcoming.

There was a real buzz in the air as everyone gathered to share in the joy. It wasn’t just a party — it was a celebration of life, friendship, and the memories that Masood and Michael continue to make at The Willows.

Celebrating Two Remarkable Individuals

Both Masood and Michael have led rich and fulfilling lives, and we took time throughout the day to reflect on their experiences, their interests, and the contributions they’ve made to our home.

Masood Zia is known among staff and fellow residents for his thoughtful nature and gentle humour. He enjoys quiet afternoons reading, chatting with friends, and taking part in group activities. For his birthday, he received a beautifully made memory book created with messages and photos from residents and staff alike — a touching tribute to the friendships he’s formed and the impact he’s had on those around him. His family joined the celebration and shared their thanks for the warm and supportive care he receives at The Willows.

Michael Creaton, a long-time lover of stories and conversation, has always brought laughter and insight to our community. He has a keen mind and a great sense of humour, often seen leading trivia games or engaging others in light-hearted discussion. On his special day, he was surprised with a handmade birthday cake and a few favourite songs that had him smiling and tapping along.

Music, Laughter, and Shared Joy

No birthday celebration is complete without music, and we were delighted to welcome a local acoustic duo who performed familiar tunes that had everyone joining in. Residents tapped their feet and sang along, and some even got up to dance — including Michael, who didn’t hesitate to show off a few classic moves!

Masood also enjoyed a song that brought back fond memories. It was a wonderful moment, reminding us all how music can bring comfort, connection, and joy in the simplest of ways.

Afternoon tea followed, with a delicious spread prepared by our kitchen team. There were finger sandwiches, fresh fruit, homemade treats, and of course, two specially designed birthday cakes — one to reflect Masood’s love of calm pastimes, and another celebrating Michael’s playful and social nature.

The cakes were cut to the sound of clapping and laughter, and everyone raised a glass (of sparkling elderflower) to toast two truly wonderful members of our home.

A Celebration of Togetherness

One of the most touching aspects of the celebration was the presence of family members. Some visited in person, while others joined virtually, thanks to the efforts of our team who set up video calls for those unable to attend. It meant the world to both birthday celebrants to see their loved ones and hear familiar voices sharing in their joy.

At The Willows, we pride ourselves on fostering a sense of togetherness — whether that’s between residents, families, or staff. Watching residents support and celebrate each other was a beautiful reminder of the caring, close-knit community we’ve built.

Both Masood and Michael took time to thank the staff for the love and care they provide daily. “You’ve made this day so special,” said Masood. “I feel lucky to be here.” Michael added, “It’s been one of the best birthdays I’ve had in years — and all thanks to the wonderful people around me.”

Living Life Fully at Every Age

At The Willows Nursing Home, we believe that every day offers the chance to create joy and connection. Whether it’s a quiet moment over a cup of tea or a full birthday celebration, we do our best to make each day meaningful for our residents.

Our team works closely with each individual to understand their interests and preferences, creating personalised care and opportunities for engagement that support physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Events like Masood and Michael’s birthday party reflect our belief that care is about more than support — it’s about living life to the fullest, no matter the age.

Looking Ahead

As the music faded and the final crumbs of cake were enjoyed, there was a lovely sense of contentment throughout the home. New memories were made, and two very special residents were reminded just how much they are appreciated.

We’re already looking forward to the next celebration — because at The Willows, every life is worth celebrating, and every day is a chance to bring happiness to someone’s heart.

Happy 75th, Masood. Happy 76th, Michael. Here’s to more laughter, friendship, and cherished moments together.
