Aloha from Seaview: Hawaiian BBQ Brings Sunshine and Smiles

That belief came to life in full colour recently at Seaview Nursing Home, our beautiful seaside home in Hastings, where we hosted a vibrant, Hawaiian-themed BBQ party filled with music, laughter, and meaningful connections.

This wasn’t just any summer event. With the garden adorned in tropical decorations, flower garlands around every neck, and the smell of sizzling BBQ in the air, our residents, families, and local guests were treated to a joyous celebration that brought the spirit of the islands right to our doorstep.

🌿 Special Guests That Made Our Day

We were honoured by the presence of several distinguished and community-spirited guests. First and foremost, we were delighted to welcome the Green Mayor of Hastings, Councillor Becca Horn, whose visit added a real sense of civic pride and recognition. The Mayor’s warm and engaging manner with our residents was truly appreciated by everyone.

In addition, we were joined by representatives from our local police and fire brigade. The visit from the firefighters was especially exciting. Residents, staff, and family members were invited to view the fire engine up close, try on helmets, and even handle some of the equipment. The team shared stories of their day-to-day roles, which fascinated and inspired all ages. It was a fantastic moment of learning and connection between generations and public services.

🎶 Music That Transported Us

Setting the mood for the afternoon was the wonderfully talented Ritchie Lee, whose live performance of tropical classics and retro favourites brought a true island feel to the party. With hits that captured the easy-going rhythm and sunshine spirit of Hawaii, residents clapped, sang along, and even danced — some with staff, others with visiting relatives.

It’s always moving to see the power of music bring people together, and Ritchie’s voice certainly made memories that will linger long after the final note. He engaged warmly with the crowd, took requests, and made everyone feel part of something truly special.

🍍 Food, Glorious Food!

Our BBQ menu didn’t disappoint — it was a feast worthy of a luau! The team went above and beyond to ensure there was something for everyone, including:

• Juicy burgers and hot dogs, grilled to perfection

• Tasty vegetarian options and tropical-inspired fruit platters

• Hawaiian-style kebabs and colourful salads

• Cool drinks and refreshing juices to keep everyone hydrated

The delicious food was served with beaming smiles by our kitchen staff, who embraced the theme wholeheartedly with flower garlands and Hawaiian shirts. One of the many things we pride ourselves on at Seaview Nursing Home is that we treat every event as a family occasion — because that’s how we see our residents: as part of our extended family.

🦎 A Wild and Wonderful Surprise: Jaws N Claws

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get more exciting, we were thrilled to welcome our final guests: the team from Jaws n Claws, a live animal encounter experience that was a huge hit among residents, staff, and family alike.

From reptiles to creepy crawlies, and even a few more cuddly creatures, the hands-on session was both educational and entertaining. Brave residents had the chance to hold snakes and lizards (with a little help from staff!) and learn fascinating facts about these exotic animals. The expressions of delight and amazement were priceless — it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many.

Even our more reserved guests found themselves intrigued and engaged, asking questions and marvelling at the beauty and mystery of the natural world. This visit added a unique and interactive dimension to our summer celebration and will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.

💛 Celebrating Community and Connection

One of the most heartening aspects of the event was the sense of togetherness. Families turned up in numbers to enjoy the festivities, reconnect with loved ones, and meet the wider Seaview community. The sight of grandchildren playing in the garden, residents sharing stories with visitors, and staff laughing with guests captured everything we value at Cardinal Healthcare.

It’s in these moments that we’re reminded why we do what we do — to create homes where compassionate care is felt in every interaction, where people of all backgrounds feel welcome, and where joy is just as important as health and safety.
