Celebrating Carers’ Week at The Willows Nursing Home

News | June 18, 2025

At The Willows Nursing Home, part of the Cardinal Healthcare group, we recently had the pleasure of celebrating Carers’ Week – a special time dedicated to recognising and honouring the incredible contributions of our dedicated care team.

Carers’ Week is an annual awareness campaign that highlights the vital role of carers across the UK, and at The Willows, it’s a chance for us to express heartfelt appreciation for our staff who go above and beyond each day to deliver exceptional care. These are the individuals who form the heart of our home, ensuring that residents not only receive the practical support they need but also feel safe, valued, and genuinely cared for.

Honouring Compassion, Dedication, and Skill

Our carers are so much more than staff members – they are companions, listeners, encouragers, and often a source of strength during challenging times. Whether it’s assisting with daily routines, providing specialist dementia care, or simply offering a warm smile and a comforting chat, our team demonstrates unwavering compassion and professionalism in all they do.

The work of a carer is both complex and deeply human. It requires sensitivity, patience, and resilience. During Carers’ Week, we took time to reflect on the impact our team has on the lives of our residents. Through personalised care plans, built on life history assessments and meaningful engagement, our carers build genuine relationships that promote dignity, respect, and emotional wellbeing.

A Week of Celebration and Recognition

To mark this special occasion, we organised a series of events and surprises to celebrate our wonderful team. The week kicked off with a hearty breakfast served to all staff by the management team – a small gesture to say “thank you” for the countless early mornings and late nights our carers take in stride.

Throughout the week, carers were treated to pamper sessions including hand massages and mini-manicures, provided by local volunteers and community supporters. We also held daily prize draws, giving staff the chance to win gift vouchers, wellness hampers, and extra annual leave days.

Residents joined in the celebrations too, creating handmade “thank you” cards and artwork with messages of appreciation. These were displayed throughout the home, transforming our corridors into a vibrant tribute to the people who care for them each day.

Voices of Gratitude

One resident shared her thoughts:
“The carers here are truly special. They know what I need before I even ask, and they always make me feel seen and heard. I don’t know what I’d do without them.”

Families also sent in notes of appreciation, many of which were read aloud during a special “Tea & Thanks” afternoon held in the garden lounge. Over cups of tea and slices of cake, stories were shared, memories revisited, and the deep bonds between carers, residents, and families were celebrated.

The Core of Our Ethos

Carers’ Week at The Willows is more than just a celebration – it’s a reaffirmation of our core values at Cardinal Healthcare. We believe in delivering care that honours the individual, supports independence, and builds a sense of community. Our ethos places the well-being of each resident at the centre of all we do, and our carers bring this ethos to life every single day.

For our residents, many of whom live with dementia or complex health needs, our carers provide not just physical support but emotional connection. They take the time to get to know each person – their life story, preferences, fears, and joys – and use this knowledge to craft care that truly meets the person, not just the condition.

Training and Development: Investing in Our Carers

We also used Carers’ Week as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of training, development, and support for our care team. At Cardinal Healthcare, we are committed to providing our staff with the resources they need to grow in their roles and feel confident in their practice.

Ongoing training in areas such as dementia care, safeguarding, and end-of-life support ensures that our team stays up to date with the latest best practices. Equally important is the emotional support we offer through regular supervisions, wellbeing check-ins, and access to external counselling services. Caring for others is deeply rewarding, but it also requires space for carers to care for themselves.

Looking Ahead

As Carers’ Week drew to a close, we were left with a renewed sense of pride and gratitude for the people who make The Willows a true home for our residents. Their empathy, hard work, and quiet heroism do not go unnoticed.

We also took the opportunity to invite members of the local community to learn more about careers in care. Open days and career talks helped raise awareness of the invaluable role of carers and encouraged others to consider joining the sector.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To all our carers – thank you. Thank you for your patience on the difficult days, your laughter on the good days, and your consistency on every day in between. Thank you for treating each resident with dignity, for recognising the person behind the diagnosis, and for creating a place where people feel safe and loved.

You embody the spirit of Cardinal Healthcare and help us realise our mission: to provide homes for life, where every person is respected, supported, and enabled to live meaningfully.

Here’s to you, this Carers’ Week and always.
