Celebrating Father’s Day at The Willows Nursing Home

News | June 18, 2025

Father’s Day is a cherished occasion at The Willows Nursing Home – a time when we come together to honour the remarkable fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who enrich our community with their wisdom, warmth, and stories.

At Cardinal Healthcare, we believe that everyone deserves to feel recognised, celebrated, and appreciated. Father’s Day provides the perfect opportunity to do just that. It’s not only a celebration of the men in our care, but also a tribute to the life experiences, values, and contributions they’ve made – to their families, their communities, and the world around them.

A Day of Reflection and Celebration

This year, Father’s Day at The Willows was filled with joy, laughter, and moments of quiet reflection. Our care team worked together with residents and their families to ensure the day was both personal and meaningful.

The morning began with a special breakfast menu featuring residents’ favourites – from a full English breakfast to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, all served with fresh orange juice, coffee, and a smile. The dining area was decorated with handmade banners and photographs of residents with their loved ones, sparking heart-warming conversations and shared memories.

Honouring the Men Who Shaped Our Home

As part of our celebrations, we created a “Wall of Honour” in the lounge – a display of stories, photos, and tributes to the fathers in our care. Each story told a different tale: of wartime service, of long careers and hard work, of families raised with love, and of hobbies and passions that still bring joy today.

Mr Harrison, one of our residents, proudly shared memories of building model airplanes with his children. Another resident, Mr Patel, spoke of his days as a teacher and the pride he still feels in seeing former pupils succeed. These stories reminded us all of the depth and richness of the lives led before arriving at The Willows – lives full of adventure, responsibility, humour, and love.

Family Visits and Special Moments

Families were invited to join us throughout the day, with many taking part in our Father’s Day Afternoon Tea event in the garden. Despite a few scattered clouds, the sun shone brightly enough for us to enjoy an al fresco celebration. Tables were dressed with floral centrepieces, and our kitchen team prepared a delightful spread of sandwiches, scones, cakes, and tea.

One of the highlights of the day was the live performance by a local acoustic duo, playing a selection of classic favourites from the 1950s and 60s – a nostalgic treat that had toes tapping and a few residents dancing in their chairs.

For residents whose families were unable to visit, our team ensured no one felt left out. Carers spent extra time sitting with these residents, reading letters and cards from loved ones or making video calls so they could see familiar faces and hear familiar voices.

Personalised Gestures and Thoughtful Gifts

Each father received a personalised card and gift from the team, thoughtfully selected to reflect their interests. For some, it was a new crossword book or favourite chocolate; for others, a framed photo from a memorable day at the home or a small bottle of their favourite aftershave.

We understand that Father’s Day can also bring mixed emotions for some, especially those who may be grieving or feeling the absence of family. Our pastoral care team was on hand to offer support and a listening ear, creating space for residents to express whatever they felt, without pressure or expectation.

Living Our Ethos Every Day

Father’s Day at The Willows isn’t just about a single event – it reflects the ethos we live by every day at Cardinal Healthcare. We recognise and celebrate the individuality of each person in our care, and we believe in creating moments that are not only enjoyable but deeply meaningful.

Our team takes the time to learn about each resident’s life story, using this knowledge to inform the way we care for them – whether that’s through tailored activities, preferred routines, or simply knowing how they take their tea. By building relationships grounded in respect and compassion, we create a genuine sense of home and belonging.

We understand that many of our residents are living with dementia or other health conditions that can affect memory and communication. That’s why we place great importance on sensory engagement, reminiscence activities, and continuity of care – especially during events like Father’s Day, which can trigger both joy and longing.

A Home for Life, Filled with Purpose

Celebrations like Father’s Day are part of our commitment to ensuring residents live fulfilling lives, full of purpose and connection. At The Willows, we believe that age and care needs should never be a barrier to joy or self-expression.

This belief underpins everything we do, from our carefully designed activities programme to our 24-hour nursing support. Whether it’s planting in the garden, enjoying music therapy, or simply sharing a story over a cuppa, our aim is to ensure each resident feels seen, heard, and valued – every day.

Gratitude to Our Team

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our compassionate care team. From our carers and nurses to our chefs, housekeepers, and activities coordinators, every member of staff plays a vital role in making Father’s Day – and every day – special for our residents.

Their attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and commitment to providing the highest standard of care make all the difference. On behalf of our residents and families, we thank them for all they do.

Looking Forward

As the day came to a close, residents reflected on the celebrations with smiles and stories. It was a day filled with gratitude – for memories made, families connected, and the bonds that continue to grow within our home.

Father’s Day at The Willows is a reminder that every person, regardless of age or ability, deserves to be celebrated. It is our privilege to care for such extraordinary individuals and to ensure that, at every stage of life, they are honoured with the dignity and love they deserve.
