Finding Balance and Joy: Chair Yoga at Birdscroft Nursing Home

News | February 27, 2025

At Birdscroft Nursing Home, we’re always looking for ways to enrich the lives of our residents – both physically and mentally. One of our most loved weekly activities is chair yoga, a gentle and inclusive form of exercise that offers countless benefits for older adults. From boosting flexibility to reducing stress, chair yoga has become a true highlight in our home.

Gentle Movement, Big Benefits

Chair yoga is specially designed for those with limited mobility or balance concerns, allowing residents to enjoy the benefits of yoga without needing to get down on the floor. Movements are performed while seated or using a chair for support, focusing on gentle stretching, breathing techniques, and mindful movement.

Many of our residents have found that regular sessions have helped them feel more energised, relaxed, and steady on their feet. The light stretching improves circulation and joint mobility, while deep breathing brings a sense of calm and focus.

A Weekly Favourite

Led by a qualified instructor with experience in elderly care, our sessions are tailored to meet the needs and comfort levels of each participant. Residents are encouraged to go at their own pace, and no one is ever pushed beyond their limits. The atmosphere is relaxed, cheerful, and full of encouragement.

More Than Just Exercise

Chair yoga at Birdscroft is not just about physical health, it’s about connection and well-being. Each session becomes a moment of togetherness, with residents supporting one another and forming bonds over shared experiences. It’s a time to breathe deeply, smile often, and feel good in both body and mind.

Home Manager Oksana Savka shares: “Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Activities like chair yoga are not only great for our residents’ health, but they also bring joy, purpose, and a sense of community. It’s a simple but powerful way to lift spirits.”

Supporting Healthy, Happy Ageing

We believe that staying active and engaged is key to ageing well. That’s why our activity programme includes a variety of options – from arts and crafts to music therapy and gentle gardening, all tailored to the interests and needs of our residents.

Chair yoga continues to grow in popularity, and we’re proud to offer such a safe, effective, and enjoyable way to support the health and happiness of those who call Birdscroft home.

Come and See for Yourself

Whether it’s through a chair yoga class, a garden walk, or simply sharing a cup of tea with friends, life at Birdscroft is full of opportunities to thrive.

If you’d like to learn more about our wellbeing activities or arrange a visit, we’d love to welcome you. At Birdscroft Nursing Home, every day is a chance to move gently, breathe deeply, and live fully.
