At Cardinal Healthcare, we believe that life in our homes should be filled with warmth, laughter, and opportunities to celebrate together. Special occasions, whether large or small, give residents, staff, and families the chance to share meaningful moments, reminisce, and create new memories. This summer, at Seaview Nursing Home in Hastings, our staff organised a Beer Festival celebration inspired by the much-loved Great British Beer Festival – and what a resounding success it was!
The Great British Beer Festival (GBBF), held annually at Olympia in London, has long been a highlight in the national calendar. Organised by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), it is often described as “the biggest pub in the world”. Each year in August, it brings together thousands of people to enjoy a vast range of beers, ales, ciders, and perries, alongside live music, food, and entertainment.
But the event is about more than drinks; it’s about tradition, community, and celebration. At Seaview, our team wanted to capture this same spirit – bringing the joy of a beer festival into our home, tailored to our residents’ needs and interests.
The atmosphere on the day was truly special. The lounge was transformed into a mini festival setting, decorated with colourful bunting, beer mats, and cheerful signage reminiscent of a traditional pub. Long tables were set out to encourage conversation and togetherness, and the smell of freshly cooked food added to the excitement.
Our staff went above and beyond to make the event as authentic as possible, and the results were remarkable. From the decorations to the food and music, everything came together to create a festive, welcoming environment that instantly lifted spirits.
The star of the show was, of course, the beer tasting. Residents were offered a variety of carefully selected beers, ales, and ciders, with lighter alcohol-free options available for those who preferred a gentler choice. Each drink was served with a little background – tasting notes, fun facts, and, in some cases, stories about the breweries or the history of British beer-making.
The tasting proved to be a great talking point. Many residents reminisced about their first pint, their favourite local pubs, or times spent in beer gardens with friends and family. Some laughed as they remembered sneaking a sip of their father’s ale as children, while others fondly recalled raising a glass on special occasions. These moments of storytelling were as refreshing as the drinks themselves, sparking laughter and conversation around the tables.
No beer festival would be complete without food, and our in-house chef ensured that the menu was every bit as memorable as the drinks. Inspired by traditional pub favourites, the spread included ploughman’s platters, pies, sausage rolls, freshly baked bread, and cheeses, along with lighter options like crisp salads.
To satisfy sweet cravings, there were homemade cakes, biscuits, and scones – a nod to the British love of afternoon tea, which paired perfectly with the event. Residents and staff alike agreed that the food was delicious and the perfect accompaniment to the tasting experience.
As with the Great British Beer Festival itself, music was an important part of our celebration. Residents enjoyed a lively playlist of classic British tunes, pub favourites, and sing-along numbers that encouraged clapping, tapping, and in some cases even dancing in chairs.
Music has a unique way of lifting the mood, and it was wonderful to see so many residents joining in. Some sang along to the familiar choruses, while others simply enjoyed the rhythm and energy of the day. The combination of music, conversation, and laughter gave the celebration a real festival feel.
In addition to food and drink, our Activities Team organised a series of light-hearted games to keep the festive spirit alive. There were beer-themed quizzes, a “guess the ale” challenge, and even some traditional pub-style games that had residents laughing together.
The sense of community was palpable. Families who joined their loved ones commented on how heartwarming it was to see residents so engaged, while staff were praised for their creativity and dedication. The event truly demonstrated how special it can be when everyone comes together to celebrate.
While the event was great fun, it also highlighted something deeply important: the value of shared experiences in care homes. At Seaview, we know that activities like this are not just entertainment – they are vital for wellbeing.
Celebrations like our Beer Festival encourage social interaction, helping residents to connect with each other, their families, and staff. They also provide opportunities for reminiscence, as residents recall happy memories linked to pubs, festivals, and past celebrations. For those living with dementia, music and familiar tastes can be particularly powerful in sparking recognition and joy.
Most importantly, such events create a sense of normality and belonging. By recreating the feel of a festival, we reminded our residents that life is to be enjoyed, no matter where you are or what stage of life you’re in.
The smiles on residents’ faces spoke volumes, but the feedback afterwards was equally touching. One resident remarked, “It felt just like being back at the pub with friends – I haven’t laughed so much in ages.” Another added, “The beer was lovely, but the company was even better.”
Family members also shared their appreciation, noting how much their loved ones enjoyed the day and how events like these bring vibrancy to life at Seaview. Many praised the staff for their hard work in making the festival such a success.
Following the success of this celebration, we are already planning future themed events to keep the joy flowing at Seaview. From music and cultural festivals to seasonal parties, our aim is always to bring residents and families together in fun and meaningful ways.
And who knows – perhaps our Beer Festival will become an annual tradition, just like its famous inspiration in London!
The Beer Festival celebration at Seaview Nursing Home was more than just a party – it was a day of joy, community, and togetherness. Inspired by the Great British Beer Festival, our staff created a wonderful event that gave residents the chance to taste, reminisce, laugh, and celebrate life.
At Cardinal Healthcare, we are committed to ensuring that our homes are not only places of safety and comfort, but also places where life is lived fully and joyfully. The success of our Beer Festival is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the vibrant spirit of our residents.
As we raised our glasses that day, the message was clear: cheers to life, to community, and to making every day special.
