Reliving the Swinging Sixties – A Music Quiz Day at Dene

News | September 08, 2025

At Cardinal Healthcare, we know how powerful music can be in connecting people, stirring memories, and creating joy. At Dene Place in West Horsley, one of the highlights of the summer calendar was a 1960s Music Quiz Day, which brought together residents and staff for an afternoon filled with laughter, nostalgia, and a touch of healthy competition.

The sixties were an era of profound cultural change. It was a decade defined by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Motown, and the unforgettable sounds of Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield. For many of our residents, these tunes carry deep personal meaning—reminders of their youth, friendships, dances, romances, and social gatherings. So, when the idea of a 60s-themed quiz was suggested, everyone was eager to join in.

Setting the Scene

The lounge at Dene Place was transformed for the occasion, decorated with colourful posters of iconic sixties bands and artists. The tables were laid out with quiz sheets, pencils, and plenty of cups of tea and coffee. Staff added a touch of playfulness by donning retro-inspired headbands, tie-dye shirts, and peace-sign accessories, which brought smiles to everyone’s faces as they walked in.

Before the quiz began, residents reminisced together, sharing stories of their favourite concerts and memories from the decade. Some spoke about their first dances, others about saving up pocket money to buy vinyl records, and a few even recalled attending legendary gigs at venues like the Marquee Club in London. It was clear from the very start that this event was going to be a special one.

The Quiz Begins

The quiz itself was made up of 30 questions, covering everything from artist names and song titles to music trivia and album releases. Questions such as “Which band released the song ‘House of the Rising Sun’ in 1964?” and “Who was known as the Queen of Soul?” sparked much discussion and debate across the room.

There were also short snippets of songs played through the speakers, and participants had to guess the title and performer. Some residents were quick to shout out answers, while others hummed along before the memory clicked into place. The room was alive with energy, filled with the sound of people softly singing along and laughing when they mixed up one band for another.

A Star Performance from Denise

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the impromptu performance by Denise, one of our residents, who in his younger years was the lead singer of a band. As the melodies played, he couldn’t resist joining in—and soon his rich voice filled the room. He sang the tunes with such passion and clarity that everyone stopped to listen. For a moment, it felt as though we had been transported back to a sixties dance hall.

Denise’s performance was a beautiful reminder of the talents and experiences our residents carry with them, and how music continues to provide a platform for self-expression. His voice inspired others to join in too, and before long, the lounge had turned into a sing-along. Songs like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “My Girl” rang out, with residents swaying gently in their chairs and clapping to the beat.

The Winner’s Crown

As the quiz continued, the competition grew more spirited. Some residents worked together in teams, while others preferred to rely on their own memory banks. Staff members joined in too, adding to the fun and camaraderie.

When the scores were tallied at the end, it was Noel who emerged as the clear winner, achieving an impressive 15 out of 30 points. His sharp memory for sixties tunes and trivia earned him a well-deserved round of applause. Noel was presented with a small prize and wore his winner’s crown with pride, grinning as the room erupted in cheers.

More Than Just a Quiz

While the quiz itself was a highlight, the day was about so much more than questions and answers. It was about connection, memory, and joy. Music has an incredible ability to transport people back in time, and for our residents, this event unlocked treasured moments from the past.

Several residents spoke afterwards about how the day had reminded them of their teenage years or early adulthood, when music was the heartbeat of social life. For some, it brought back the joy of dancing in village halls or attending live concerts with friends. For others, it sparked memories of listening to the radio late at night or buying their first record.

These shared experiences created a sense of unity in the room. It wasn’t just about reliving the past individually, but also about sharing those memories collectively, creating bonds between residents, staff, and families.

Food, Fun, and Fellowship

No celebration at Dene Place would be complete without delicious refreshments. After the quiz, everyone was treated to a spread of sandwiches, cakes, and freshly baked scones, all prepared by our in-house catering team. Cups of tea were poured, conversations flowed easily, and the atmosphere remained light and joyful.

Ben, our dedicated Activities Co-ordinator, deserves special thanks for organising such a thoughtful event. His efforts ensured that every detail was planned with care, from the quiz questions to the decorations, making it a day that residents will remember fondly.

The Power of Music at Dene Place

At Cardinal Healthcare, we place great value on activities that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit. Music, in particular, plays a central role in our homes. Research has shown that music can have profound benefits for older adults, from boosting mood and reducing anxiety to improving memory and encouraging social interaction.

The 60s Music Quiz Day at Dene Place was a shining example of this in action. Residents not only exercised their memory and recall skills but also experienced the joy of singing, sharing stories, and laughing together. It was a holistic experience that touched on emotional, social, and cognitive wellbeing.

Looking Ahead

Given the overwhelming success of this quiz, there are already plans to host similar events in the future, perhaps focusing on other decades of music. Whether it’s the rock-and-roll spirit of the 1950s, the disco beats of the 1970s, or the pop anthems of the 1980s, we know that music will continue to bring our community together.

For now, though, we look back with gratitude at a day that brought so much happiness to our home. Denise’s heartfelt singing, Noel’s impressive quiz victory, and the shared laughter of our residents will remain cherished memories for everyone involved.

Conclusion

The 60s Music Quiz Day at Dene Place was more than an activity; it was a celebration of memory, talent, and togetherness. Events like this embody what we strive for at Cardinal Healthcare: creating environments where residents not only feel safe and cared for but also engaged, valued, and connected.

As the final notes of the day faded and the laughter lingered, one thing was clear—music truly has the power to unite generations, lift spirits, and remind us all of the joys of living.
